Federal Pell Grant Eligibility

The share of degree-seeking undergraduates eligible for a Federal Pell Grant.

Definition

A student is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant when they:

  • demonstrate financial need for need-based federal student aid programs
  • are a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen
  • have a valid Social Security number (except students from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia or the Republic of Palau)
  • are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student in an eligible degree or certificate program
  • maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • meet the FAFSA submission and certification requirements
  • show they are qualified to obtain a college or career school education

How it is calculated

The population is degree-seeking undergraduates only. Nondegree students are not in it, so its total differs from Student Headcount.
